Meaning and Definition of ES



The word environment is derived from the French word environner, meaning to encircle or surrounding. It can be defined as the circumstances or conditions that surround an organism or group of organisms. The term environment is considered as a composite term fro the condition in which organisms live and thus consists of air, water, food and sunlight which are basic needs of life organisms.

Environmental Study is the study of the interactions among the physical, chemical and biological components of the environment; with a focus on pollution and degradation of the environment related human activities; and the impact on biodiversity and sustainability from local and global development. 

Environment can be defined as; 

  • Environment is the sum of all social, economical, biological, physical or chemical factors which constitute the surroundings of man.
  • Environment refers to the sum total of conditions which surround man at given point in space and time.
  • Environment is the sum total of physical and biotic conditions influencing responses of the organisms.
